The structure

An impressive structure, with a 5-km perimeter and a gross floorspace of 530,000 sq.m lying on a 2,000,000 sq.m site. These are only some of the figures for Fiera Milano’s exhibition complex, the largest civil engineering project ever carried out in Europe in recent years and costing €800 million, entirely self-funded by Fondazione Fiera Milano.

There are 8 single- and two-level pavilions that occupy a gross indoor exhibition space of approx. 345,000 sq.m, added to which is 60,000 sq.m of outdoor space. Each building is divided into two exhibition areas (4 in the two-level buildings), for a total of 20halls that can be used independently, since each has all the necessary facilities: reception area, refreshment areas, meeting rooms, wired offices with high-tech fittings. All the meeting rooms can also be accessed directly by vehicles  – including those on the upper level of the two-level pavilions, which have access ramps.

The 28 moving walkways along the boulevard covered by the large glass and steel sail make it easier to move along the central axis because of their two levels. This "spinal column", with its services, restaurants and showrooms is 1,400meters long and 32 meters wide (41 at the ends), for a total of 47,000 sq.m; its glass covering is made of more than 100,000pieces that are all different and not interchangeable.

The central axis also features four glass and steel structures that accommodate the exhibition secretariat offices and occupy an overall 4,000 sq.m area.

Below the so-called “chimney” is the “Stella Polare” congress center with its 10 rooms that can accommodate 2,600people. Each single-level pavilion also has five small rooms (20 to 50 seats) and the two-level pavilions have 13 rooms. Another eight meeting areas are provided along the central axis.

Next to the congress center, in the sail’s central point, is the multi-functional service center with a press room, cloakroom, post office, bank, security office, language secretariat, photocopy/fax center, travel agency, pharmacy, stores, police station and branch of the Carabinieri (Italian military corps with police duties). The hospitality services include 14different restaurants (self service, free flow, table service), sevenbanquet areas, 10 large snack bars and 50cafés.

A new Fiera, but also a revitalized natural landscape: the pavilions will soon be surrounded by 9 hectares of parkland with an internal walkway to provide an 180,000 sq.m area for relaxing.
