The international competition
In order to requalify two-thirds of the historic fairgrounds, Fondazione Fiera Milano launched an international competition through its controlled company Sviluppo Sistema Fiera. The competition attracted world famous economic-financial players and architects mainly because of: the professional approach with the tender documentation being assessed by the ULI (Urban Land Institute) and with Lazard & Co. acting as the advisor;
clear-cut decision-making procedures; synergies between the public and private sector, with all the authorities taking part in the process.
CityLife won the tender with A Project for Milan, signed by architects Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki, Daniel Libeskind and Pier Paolo Maggiora.
Overall, the Milan Fair transformation project redesigned the boundaries, the economy, and the transport and road networks of north-west Milan, returned open space and improved the quality of life in the city, and gave the country a high-caliber exhibition and congress system. These important achievements open the doors wide to the future and its scenarios and continue the century-old tradition that began way back in 1920.
