The New Fiera Milano Complex at the starting gate

Sviluppo Sistema Fiera successfully concludes negotiations with group led by Astaldi

A large-scale project to strengthen the leadership role played by Fiera Milano in Italy and abroad.

The group led by Astaldi, along with the firms of Vianini Lavori SpA and Impresa Pizzarotti & C. spa, successfully concluded negotiations with Sviluppo Sistema Fiera for construction of the New Milan Fair Complex. The unanimous agreement reached by all Fair bodies was presented to the Supervisory Committee which met today, presided over by Roberto Formigoni, President of the Lombardy Region, in Rho-Pero, where the new complex will be built. Work is set to begin this Fall and to be completed within 30 months. Finalization of the contract is underway.

Sviluppo Sistema Fiera, under the guidance of Fondazione Fiera Milano, will oversee the construction of Fiera Milano’s New Complex, that will occupy a total surface area of 1.4 million sq. m. The project submitted by the Astaldi group was designed by architect Massimiliano Fuksas.

There will be a total of 8 pavilions (4 single-level, 2 single-level with extra-high ceilings, and 2 bi-level pavilions), for a total saleable net surface area of more than 200,000 sq m. There will be 14,000 parking spaces for visitors and 3,500 for exhibitors; 25 café/bars, 20 restaurants, and 80 meeting rooms. The entire work is valued at more than 500 million Euros, and will make Fiera Milano, with its New and City Complexes, the number one exhibition system in the world.

“The picture is now complete, and we are on schedule to begin this large-scale project that will keep us busy for the next thirty months” noted Claudio Artusi, Managing Director of Sviluppo Sistema Fiera. “The Astaldi project meets the business plan requirements set by Fiera Milano, and embodies the needs expressed in the call for tenders”.

“This is a very special day for Fondazione Fiera Milano and Sviluppo Sistema Fiera: we are on schedule with this project and we are committed to continuing this way,” explained Luigi Roth, Chairman and CEO of Fondazione Fiera Milano.

“We are re-designing the Northwest section of Milan, not only its buildings and infrastructures, but also its economy, and we are fully aware of the responsibility that this implies. This project means further growth, making Milan and Italy the benchmark for trade exhibitions on a global scale”.

The other three groups of companies that submitted high-level professional bids for the job are led by:  Impregilo (Italy), Eiffage (France), Bovis Lend Lease (Great Britain).

The Astaldi Group is among the foremost general contractors in Italy and works primarily in the design and construction of large-scale civil engineering projects in the areas of transportation infrastructures, hydroelectric and energy plants, and non-residential buildings. It is listed on the Star segment of the Italian Stock Market and is known, among others, for works such as the Rome-Naples high speed rail line, the Lep project for CERN in Geneva and the City of Science in Naples.

The design selected for the New Complex is the brainchild of Architect Massimiliano Fuksas, known for such works as the Centro Congressi Italia in Rome’s EUR district, the Italian Space Agency, the Exhibition and Congress Center in Angouleme (France) and the urban development project at Geneva’s Place des Nations.
