Transparency key to increased security and legal hiring practices at new fair complex

Sviluppo Sistema Fiera meets with the Federation of Building and Construction Workers of the Province of Milan, the Nuovo Polo Fieristico consortium consisting of Astaldi, Pizzarotti, and Vianini, commissioned as general contractor, and Assimpredil Milan

A meeting took place today in Rho-Pero, in the former Agip building, now headquarters of Sviluppo Sistema Fiera, the company founded by Fondazione Fiera Milano to construct the New Fair Complex. In attendance were representatives of SSF, the Federation of Building and Construction Workers of the Province of Milan, the Nuovo Polo Fieristico consortium consisting of Astaldi, Pizzarotti, and Vianini, commissioned to build the project, and Assimpredil Milano.

Purpose of the meeting was to finalize a memorandum of understanding among all parties involved in the construction of the New Fair Complex, with the aim of guaranteeing safety on-site and the legal status of all laborers.

Thanks to this agreement – commented Luigi Roth, Chairman and CEO of Fondazione Fiera Milano and of Sviluppo Sistema Fiera – “all the players involved in the construction of the new Fiera complex are committed to acting with maximum transparency and responsibility, both in terms of observing all safety regulations and in total compliance with regulations governing contractual relationships. In keeping with its mission, Fondazione Fiera Milano, is committed to fostering the objective of safeguarding the workplace culture and guaranteeing to all a satisfactory level of social quality.”

The general contractor, Nuovo Polo Fieristico, made up of Astaldi, Pizzarotti, and Vianini, and the Federation of Building and Construction Workers, and Assimpredil, among others, agreed to implement the following measures:

  • permanent checks to be carried out using innovative methods (electronic badges, computer checks) on all persons entering the construction site, in order to prevent the use of laborers who have not been legally hired in compliance with the terms of current labor laws 
  • the Nuovo Polo Fieristico consortium (Astaldi, Pizzarotti, and Vianini) shall carry out checks on subcontractors, resorting to, where necessary, to the experts and professionals from the Bilateral Authorities (Enti Bilaterali – local associations of stakeholders set up to protect workers in the construction building industry);
  • establish a contractual obligation for all the various companies involved on-site, to comply with the legal standards set for labor protection, with special emphasis on safety ;
  • setting up of a committee to analyze all on-site safety-related issues.
