WHAT ARE COOKIES AND WHY WE USE THEM

Cookies are short text files and numbers that the websites visited by the User send to the User's terminal (usually in their browser), where they are stored and transmitted back to the same websites the next time the User visits them. When browsing a website, You may also receive on Your terminal cookies that are sent from different websites or web servers (third parties), on which certain items (such as images, maps, sounds, specific links to pages of other domains) that are present in the website You are visiting may reside. Cookies may be used for a variety of purposes (e.g., electronic authentication, monitoring of sessions, storage of information about specific user configurations used to access the server, etc.).

Cookies can be categorized based on the kind of user (first- and third-party cookies) or based on their function (technical, analytical, profiling cookies).

First-party cookies are installed by the Website operator (also called “publisher”).
Third-party cookies are installed on the user’s terminal from a website other than the one You are visiting.

In general, cookies can be completely disabled in Your browser at any time.

TYPE

DESCRIPTION
Technical cookies
These are cookies used for the sole purpose of browsing or allowing the provision of a service requested by the user (e.g., when the user is authenticated to access restricted areas). The cookies in question are not used for other purposes and are normally installed directly by the owner or operator of the Website on the User’s terminal. These may be session or browsing cookies. There are also analytical cookies, which are similar to technical cookies when they are used by the Website operator to collect information in aggregate form for statistical purposes (e.g., number of Website visitors). Finally, there are functionality cookies, which allow the User to navigate according to a series of parameters selected to improve the usability of the service provided by the Website to the User. They are distinguished into session or persistent cookies depending on whether they are automatically deleted when the browser is closed or stored in the User’s terminal for a given period. First-party technical and analytical cookies do not require the User’s consent, but must be reported in the Information Notice.

Third-party analytical cookies:
These cookies are used to monitor the use of the Website by Users for Website optimizing purposes, but in this case they have been created and made available by third parties (other than the Website operator). In these cases, the Website operator who uses this technology is not required to fulfil the relevant obligations (i.e., insertion of a banner and notification to the Supervisory Authority) if they use tools that reduce the identification capacity of the cookies used (e.g., tools to partially mask the user’s IP address). In addition, the third party that provides the cookie shall be legally bound by an agreement not to pursue any different purpose from the provision of the service provided to the Website operator, to store them separately and not to “enrich” them or “cross” them with other information they may already have. All this requires a specific Information Notice, but there is no need to obtain prior consent from the User if the aforesaid conditions are met.

Profiling cookies
These cookies are used to track the User's browsing activity in order to collect information to create User profiles (they can be used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences set when browsing the web). Even in this case, cookies can be either “first party” or “third party” cookies. The User shall in all these cases be properly informed and the operation of the cookies shall be subject to the prior consent of the User.
